Objectives:
To conduct survey for presence of virus diseases.
To study the distribution and severity of different strains of GVLRaV in wine and table grape.
To standardize more economical methods for detection of different strains of GVLRaV.
To study the effect of GVLRaV 1+3 on yield and quality of table grapes and wine in case of wine varieties.
To study the transmission of GVLRaV.
To develop management strategies for virus diseases
Duration:
01 April 2007 to 31 March 2012
Highlights:
Grape vineyards in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh will be periodically visited and surveyed for presence of diseases other than downy mildew, powdery mildew, anthracnose, rust and bacterial leafspot. New disease if noticed, its symptoms will be studied, samples will be collected to identify cause in laboratory. Once the disease and causal agent is identified, the information on distribution, susceptible varieties, and economic loss will be generated during subsequent survey visits and glass-house and laboratory studies. Geographical positioning system will be used to locate affected vineyards. Repeated survey over few years and during different seasons will lead to development of disease maps. Our recent surveys have detected presence of Grapevine Leaf Roll associated Viruses (GVLRaV), especially strains 1+3, in many wine as well as table grape varieties. Detail survey of this virus needs to be conducted and its distribution, vectors transmitting the disease and economic importance in different varieties need to be established experimentally.
During our survey, symptoms like cane drying, sudden complete plant wilting have been noticed. The cause of such symptoms have not yet determined and this study will be taken up under this project.
