Dr.
S.D. Ramteke has seven years of experience in stress physiology. He worked on
chickpea crop to found out drought tolerance genotype for his Ph.D. For MSc.
He worked on moisture stress physiology of groundnut. Presently at NRCG he is
working on growth regulators to increase the productivity and export quality
of grapes from grafted vines. He is also screening the grape genotypes for
drought tolerance and evaluating the rootstocks for drought tolerance. He is
also associated to standardize the canopy architecture.

Ranga Reddy Districts of Andhra Pradesh (September, 2004 and 19-20th
December 2004)
|
The purpose of this visit was to
survey the vineyards affected severely by berry scarring Possible reasons
for the cause in incidence of thrips, irregularity in chemicals use and
reduced canopy were identified. The bunch-scarring problem was severe in
the area. Since it was late to use any possible control measure, the grower
were informed for confirming the reasons at the research farm by the
concern scientist and will be communicated in the next season.

The growers were advised
to maintain the appropriate number of shoots per vine based on the
availability of the irrigation.
Use of rootstock in near future
for the establishment of new vineyard was also brought to their notice.
Under the shortage of
water the growers were advised to make only straight canes.
This was mainly due to the
congenial condition developed in overcrowded canopy. Removal of excess
shoots from individual vines to avoid build up of microclimate in the
canopy was suggested to the growers of the region.
Reduction in the
fruitfulness was mainly due to shortage of irrigation water. Since there
was no enough irrigation available to irrigate the vineyard, fertilizers
like Phosphorus required for the fruit bud differentiation was not applied
resulted in reduced fruitfulness.
To avoid the reduction in
the quality and mummification, the growers were advised to retain the
bunches as per the spacing available per vine.
The growers were advised
to prune the vineyard before the new growth starts. This can avoid the
wastage of reserve food material from the developed canes.
